The main tools required for calligraphy is pens and brushes, they can be pointed or flat.These are required because in calligraphy the width of the letters vary.
With pointed pens or brushes these variations in thickness are provided by variations in force on the pen or brush.
With flat or broad pens or brushes, the variations are given by the variation of the angle at which the pen is held relative to the direction of the stroke.
For decorative purposes, multi-nibbed pens—steel brushes—can be used. However, projects have also been made with felt tip and ballpoint pen, although these projects do not employ angled lines. Ink for writing is usually water-based and much less viscous than the oil based inks used in printing.
The next thing that you will need is paper and about any reasonable quality will do, as long as you don't use absorbing paper that will cause the ink to bleed. Cheap paper and newsprint will cause the ink to bleed, the best for practice would be photocopy paper. This paper will be able to take erasing of pencil lines easily.
High quality paper, which has good consistency and porosity, will enable cleaner lines, although parchment or vellum is often used, as a knife can be used to erase work on them and a light box is not needed to allow lines to pass through it. In addition, light boxes and templates are used to achieve straight lines without pencil markings detracting from the work. Ruled paper, either for a light box or direct use, is most often ruled every quarter or half inch, although inch spaces are occasionally used.
You can use a ruler and pencil to make lines with if you don't use a light box. You will need a good eraser and a flat surface to write on, and of course plenty of light.
There are several types of pens available from self contained to fountain pens and dipping pens. The last and most important is the calligraphy ink.
